Rep. Weldon to address security policy in GovTech keynote
As a member of the National Security Committee and a senior member of the House Science Committee, seventh term U.S. Representative, Curt Weldon (R.Pa.) has witnessed the technology revolution first hand. When it comes to technology, Weldon believes "we govern best when we govern least. We cannot risk hampering the dramatic development of technology with cumbersome regulation, excessive taxes or federal bureaucracy."
Weldon represents portions of Chester, Delaware and Montgovery counties, Pa. In his district, Mr. Weldon supports the promotion of technological inovation available to local teachers, students and parents. The regional HUBS project is transforming the area into the nation's first "smart region." Through the home initiative, HUBS allow a student to access homework assignments from a home computer, develop projects over the Internet and gain instant access to school resources.
Weldon has been a strong supporter of E-Rate, which will provide discounted telecommunications services to schools and libraries, since it passed Congress in 1995. Weldon would like to see, "every child, from the city to the farm have access to technology."

HPVA members lobby against the high U.S. dollar
The strength of the dollar is a tale of two perspectives-manufacuring and economic. For manufacturers of hardwood, plywood, veneer, and engineered hardwood flooring, the strong dollar depresses the sale of products in export markets. When the dollar rises against other currencies, production and payrolls are cut, making it impossible to compete with foreign manufacturers. Economically speaking, the strong dollar keeps interest rates low, making imported goods cheaper.
Herb McClaugherty, president and CEO of The Dean Company, forwarded a letter to Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill "to support using market forces and coordinated financial intervention to bring about realistic exchange rates."
John Grunwald, senior vice president of public relations at Danzer Services Inc., traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with President Bush to discuss the strong dollar as part of a coalition with NAM. While the administration did not discuss the high dollar, Grunwald urges "every HPVA member to write their elected congressional delegation, and inform them that the strength of the U.S. dollar is a national emergency."
